i've used the tool from pelican with the 2 small screws for 3 valve adjusts now, 2 times with the engine in, other time engine was out.
as long as you use locktite there are no worries, i also wrap a small piece of electrical tape tightly around the holder over the screws.
i think it boils down to having a feel for the tool you're using, and the precautions that come with the tool.
