Consumer Reports did some comprehensive tests on motor oils a while ago (about 3 years ago), and ran them through NYC taxi cabs for about 50-75K miles. Then they tore open the engines and mic'ed all the camshafts and crankshafts to see if there was a difference in wear.

No difference between dino and synthetic. They did conclude that motor oils in general have improved some ungodly percentage in terms of performance (hence the longer periods between oil changes now recommended by everyone EXCEPT JiffyLube).

Synthetic oil has a tendency to make your car leak, if your seals are on their way out (I've heard numerous stories on this one). I run synthetic in my 911 when I know I'm not going to be doing any work on it (almost never), and regular oil when I'm changing it often (dropping engine, modifying something, etc...)
