Right after I drove the car home, my clutch cable snapped. I replaced it the next day, but now the car runs really poorly (hard to idle, keeps stalling, backfires, stumbles on acceleration). Tab recommended that I go through the entire ignition system and replace each component with a spare until I track down the problem. The car has a steady "stumble" and acts like it doesn't have full power and backfires through the exhaust. So far, I've replaced the Bosch CD unit, ignition coil, battery (my Optima wouldn't hold a charge), and Pertronix ignition unit. I'm getting closer, tomorrow I'll double-check the timing and air/fuel mixture. I'm ready to throw in the towel and consider this entire season a loss as far as the Porsche goes. This has become a major disappointment for me and I'm at the point where I'm wondering if owning a 32-year old 911 is what I want. I want to drive the car on a regular basis and do maintenance, not spend all of my free time wrenching with no positive results. I'm going to contact Tab Tanner as soon as he gets back from his honeymoon and let him know I'm back to "square one" unless I figure out the problem this weekend. This had been an incredibly expensive, frustrating summer...
