I had a similar problem on my 86. The wire in the right rear wheel well had been bared a bit from being pelted with dirt and sand for 20 years. I pulled the leads off the sender on the bucket, replaced them and rewrapped the wires with shrink tube and then added an extra plastic cover you would use for wiring and plugged the wires back on the sender at the bucket. No problem. When your key is off, give the gauge a whack with your finger and the needle will drop.
