Apocalypto

Saw this tonight. Didn't want to, as the reviews described it as basically a gore-fest. But a friend wanted to see it, so whatever. In a nutshell, I'd say wait until it's on DVD if you see it at all. The big screen didn't help much, as I was hoping it might. The gore was definitely there, but that didn't really bother me. The insane cruelty did, and it was painful to watch. I suppose it's worthwhile to get a feel for how horrible humans can be; it just sucks to feel it.

The story line is over-the-top and unrealistic. Mel Gibson was obviously trying for something epic, but fell short IMO. Can't fault him for trying; not many have the guts to go against the grain for their art, and I commend him. I was hoping for better cinematography, and was disappointed. There was, I suppose, a good feel for Mayan Indian tribal life and culture, and that was worthwhile. The Mayan city was decent. The folks at the top of the altar were interesting.

There was a decent survival storyline revolving around the central character, Jaguar Paw. That part, although unrealistic, was entertaining.

I tried not to spoil the movie here. Just giving my impression. The movie is worthwhile, IMO, but tough to take for what you get.
