It sounds mechanical, but definetly harsher than a hum. This is my first 911. But, I drove a 66 bug in college 20 years ago and I don't recall that. Not that I would of cared; I thrashed that car around imagining I was in a 911 and it never left me stranded unlike my 67 micro bus.
