Consider the method that is used for locking the nut. There is a hard nut with serations on the "washer" section that bind on to softer aluminium. In undoing the nut the softer aluminum is disturbed in the opposite direction to that is used for the serations to lock.
Does this create the possibility of small aluminium particals being "dug back" with the removal of the nut?
Personally I would not take any risk when there is no problem with the existing method of fixing.
