OK. I had some amount of trouble, too. So here is what I did...
Hold the screw in place within the finish ring. Then while keeping the ring free, loose, away from the catch at the top, turn the screw into the hole just enough to barely get it started. Then slip the ring over the the top onto the catch and tighten the screw.
Hope this makes sense.
