lol...actually it IS a big party school. For years they were the Delta State "Statesmen." About 16-17 years ago, a group of rowdy, drunk students decided to come up with something to cheer on their basket ball team that was undefeated....since they were from the south and the school colors were green, they tried to come up with something southern and green. They tried the fighting algae as a tribute to pond scum but that didn't work. Someone came up with "Fighting Okra" so the student body got together and began chanting "OKRA OKRA OKRA."

The coach thought they were shouting "OPRAH OPRAH OPRAH" as a racial epithet and had them ejected from the game. Next game they were back in full force with placards so no one would miss their frivolity. Ultimately it stuck and is now the unofficial mascot.
