Have a technical question about the 915 tranny in my 79 911 sc

I still am trying to figure something out. If I drive my 911 around town mellow it runs like a dream shifts well and is quite easy to drive.
If I try to drive it really hard, say shifting at 6,000 RPM it sometimes does a weird thing.

 example:
About 4 days ago I was trying to make a green light to turn down Colorado Boulevard. I was in third gear and at about 5500 rpm, as i began to turn the corner i let off on the gas a bit the RPM dropped and then i turned soon as I got around that corner I went to shift to 4th but the second i stepped on the clutch pedal the gear shifter snapped right out of third gear and hit my hand.

I am wondering what the mechanical device is called that holds the gearshifter in place so that when i shift I physically have to pull the gear shifter out of gear and into the next.
This has happened many times and keep in mind just had a tranny overhaul. I have never driven a manual tranny car that has done this.

Advice is MUCH appreciated. This is not such a problem that i feel i need to rush over to a shop, and as long as driven relatively tame it never happens.

 Thanks!!!
