1. Are there any drawbacks to keeping the original filter?
2. For the life of me, I can't find a connection to the original filter to connect the fuel lines to. I will be using barbed fittings but they have to screw into the filter. Any advice? (One fitting which does work could be robbed from the removed accumulator but the other end doesn't work)
Thanks for any help!

You could use the original Bosch filter if you are using the Bosch CIS fuel pump. For LP applications, there are better ones. I prefer the Racor110a Fuel filter/water separator units.
If you use the CIS filter, simply cut the line on the outlet side of the filter and push the hose on (clamp it, of course) going to your FPR.
