The formed-metal cat heat shield is a bolt-on, and is *not*
welded to anything. Several bolts, captive nuts, and a bracket on the muffler/cat joint, secure the heat shield.

Aside from the burning grass issue, the heat shield does protect the rear tire (somewhat) from the intense heat radiated by the cat. Replacing the cat with a test pipe reduces the heat load dramatically on that side, FWIW.
