Just an update: I took the chain covers off and to my surprise didn't find a broken chain link. What I did find is the right chain has a master link in it and the other side doesn't. I suspect the PO must have had chain trouble and replaced the right one but didn't get all the old pieces. I can shine a light in to see the crank timing gear and can see where the chain roller pieces went around the gear taking pieces out of it too. I would guess that is why the sound/pitch of the engine changed.

I just don't have time to do a rebuild right now so I have purchased a 2.7 complete (supposedly rebuilt...time will tell). Now I have to decide on using the CIS or the carbs. I think I will try the CIS. Now I have to run a new fuel line for the HP pump. I will search the old post for more info.
