The reason you just figured this out is because you're from the west coast (yeah, I know you moved). Percentage wise, people are more health concious out west. When you travel, you get to see people from the midwest and south who are also travelling. I'm from Milwaukee, "Fat Capital" of the world (In your FACE Springfield! Woo-hoo!) I'm shocked when I see someone who isn't overweight.
I was recently in Paris and it was alarming how pretty much everyone we encountered that were fat (not many) were American. In addition to that, these paricular people were either rude, totally clueless. or both. The icing on the cake was a large guy sitting behind us at Les Deux Maggots talking business, full volume on his cell phone. What a putz.
When I returned, many asked me if the French were rude. My response was "No. Only the Americans were rude." Very embarrassing.
