You are right about the reliance on computer reads to find problems, but people would rather pay a semi experienced, semi skilled, semi intelligent man to hook up something to the car & find the problem in an hour than pay a skilled, experienced, intelligent man to trace circuits & check sensors & relays for a day.
Still on some of the early computer cars that don't have codes will either whip you or teach you & give you a sence of accomplishment.
