I think BMW is going to phase out the standard S and go with the HP2. Then mix in another try at a new ST. They are small enough and flexible enough to make "niche" bike for a short time, write off their R&D, and apply the results to a broader based bike. I think we'll see the present S engine in whatever they come out with to replace the ST. They'll continue to make and market the HP2 as long as it makes a profit.
Remember the K1? The Cruiser line? They've always played with an "S", but it's never been a world class sportbike. BMW doesn't seem to shy away from throwing a bike at a hot trend.
