remove the snap ring under the short, lower release arm, and pull it off. with that out of the way, the long, upper arm can be moved easily in order to install the spring onto the bracket. then pop it back into position with a long screwdriver, and reinstall the short arm. if the spring needs to be attached to the long arm, it too needs to be removed, and the installation done on the bench. the long arm slips off after the short arm is removed. some need more effort to get off if they're rusted to the shaft.
