I just changed out my boot and knob. On my 81 I should have been able to place a 15mm under the knob and "tap" it off. I was hitting it so hard I was afraid I was going to break something, so I cut the knob off and found two crush sleeves. Not quite sure but I think there is a set screw under the top of the knob on yours. If not its like mine. I went the cheep way and got a all leather knob from Auto Zone. I really am shocked at how good it looks.
