I was hitting it so hard I was afraid I was going to break something, so I cut the knob off and found two crush sleeves. Hmmm...sounds like mine may be the same way as yours. The top of the knob is solid and the shift pattern is engraved into the knob, so no way of getting in from the top of the knob.
I'll try the 15mm wrench and see what happens.
