Global warming and all the hysteria that goes with it was a clever plan to replace the loss of the cold war as an overarching source of fear and anxiety by the general population long before the terrorists beset us. Most of us have so little to really worry about in our daily, grindingly boring lives, that we need a source of something big and scary to worry about. It gives balance, otherwise we'd all be in the Stepford mode all the time. The media has built it up into a major money maker and the B list scientists are all getting fat reseach grants to verify the story. It's been quite a ride for them, and really very entertaining.
