I think the disadvantage BMW faces is considerable in making a SBK. The Japanese get to revamp their bike every 2 years, so even if it comprehensively outclasses the Japanese opposition, it is likely that the next model update for the ZXCBRGSXs will put them back ahead. Then, it'll just be a more expensive bike with less performance.
However, Ducati do seem to face this obstacle well. Also, we do not know how far BMW is willing to go, it may be very difficult to match in its componentry. Certainly, some sort of traction control and/or unbeatable technology could be its trump card.
