85 S2 would be a European spec 16v motor, and when it hits about 3500 rpm it goes.
Its best to assume nothing on a 928 new to you, have it checked over end to end, fix things starting with safety and PM issues and work your way down to minor stuff. If you start by fixing the most obvious problems you can find yourself thousands in with major work still ahead.
The 4 spd auto is a normal Mercedes Benz unit the same as some sedan of the same year uses, so anybody familiar with MB should do fine with it. I would start by replacing all the fluids and making sure the levels are OK.
