I had a bad experience with having a car shipped cross-country. From VT to CA. When it arrived, not only was it filthy, but it had some very nasty scratches, several gashes in the plastic bumpers, and other "shipping" related damage. $1,200 for that.... no thanks.

If you can find a reliable trucker, with an enclosed trailer for $900 I'd go for it. Just make sure you check the car over carefully before accepting delivery. Read the damage clause carefully.
It'd be more expensive to try and drive accross yourself (even if the car didn't break down).

On a side note, I made it from the L.A. area to Burlington VT in 3.5 days!
