I'm around as well. Do you know what part of town the car is in? Maybe the present owner could meet someplace half way if he's out is some suburb?
If it's not too far, it might be better to see the car in its native habitat though. I can check for massive oil stains in the drive way and maybe jack one side up to get a view of the underside.
I'm no mechanic but I am on my third 914 in the last 15 years.
