Yes, there is suppose to be a light to show you what gear you are in. The problem is probably the "paper clip" that attaches the switch to the gearshift. If you look in the center console a wire clip attaches to the gear shift lever and a switch lever. As the shifter moves front and back, the switch lever moves with it and changes the light on the cluster. Bet you want to know the part number of that broken wire don't you? Can't remember but I'll look it up for you.
