the inside contains a formed cardboard type material. it is common for these things to break/collapse over time which is why yours was probably removed. i doubt there are many perfectly intact '68 doorpanels out there. the pockets were heat sealed and not easily restorable. note that you can not buy new reproductions for this year but the other years are available. that may be your best bet. now, have you tried locating a like new condition break away style rear view mirror or dashboard? found a mirror new in the box for $125. needless to say i passed and bought a mirror from scott mclean at a great deal. it just needed some minor "touch up". welcome to the pleasures of owning a '68.
