I'd like to help and have the wiring diagrams up through '82. But I'm confused about the "7 pin connector".
Up through '82 this connector is referred to by Porsche as T6a, which is labeled: Connector, six-fold in mirror housing, driver's side. All of the new and old one's I have are 6 pin. Although I don't think any of them are new style driver's side. Any chance you're counting the center plastic locating post?
How about some photos - including the back of your control switch?
Has the set up you inherited from the PO ever worked correctly?
