It's all about choices. I used to surf about 3 times a week when i was in high school and college, San Onofre was my favorite spot.
Now I don't like the idea of going in sewage water where there are big animals that might eat me, so I go to the Colorado river. A zillion times cleaner, biggest thing there is a catfish or bass, and I can run my wave runners there all the time without worrying about the saltwater eating up all the wiring etc.
there are lots of places and things to do without going in the ocean. But if that's you thing, go with it. Not for me.
How many times do they close a beach in So Cal because of sewage related bacteria? too often. Way too often. It's always there but most of the time it's within their "acceptable limits. Not mine, theirs.
