Under the painted leather...a pleasant surprise

One of the previous owners of my recently aquired SC decided at some point to paint the interior black. I knew I was in for a project but I had no idea how bad it was. The car will end up track only, but I still would like to have the interior as good as it can be without spending too much.

The car came without an ash tray and I recently picked one up on the cheap. After taking he ash tray apart to clean and paint the metal, I noticed that the pad was actually covered in leather that was cracking. Deep down I was thinking I might have the skills to recover the pad. After peeling off the leather I found pristine black vinyl which matched perfectly to some black knee pads I had from some other place.

Since the PO used what looks to be Krylon HIGH gloss black enamel all over the car, I peeled the leather off the arm rails and the knee pads. In both cases the underlying vinyl pad was in EXCELLENT shape. So now I have an almost perfect set of arm rails and ashtray...with 2 knee pads left over in some reddish brown color (these will probably go up for sale). There was a slight dimple in the brown pads but I bet with some quality vinyl paint, these would look pretty good.

So if you think your interior is shot, you might find something interesting if you have any leather to peel back. Below are the pictures
