Keith, you did a great job of contrasting the two cars. Just had my '74 914-2.0 and the '73 911S at the PCA autocross this weekend. Wow, definitely related, but definitely different. The 'S' is fun for changing speed (motor and brakes), but the 914 beats it hands down when it comes to changing direction.
I have the same problem with my wife: she doesn't appreciate how much sense it makes to put a hot MFI engine in the 914. Add a brake upgrade and you've got to be approaching the ultimate street legal gokart.
