If you want to be "creative", the turbo approach is definitely one without a whole lot of road maps. If you're interested in a turbo approach, talk to Ed Morrow, he turbo'd a 1.8, did an awesome job, and it's still running.
I did a six conversion myself, for the same creative outlet you describe. While a lot of fun and very educational, that "bolt-on" project was about twice as long as I suspected, and my frustration grew the longer I was unable to drive it. A six conversion is child's play compared to a turbo project, especially when you finally get it running (sort of) and discover all the second-order issues like heat management, air flow, lubrication, etc. If you have a "significant other" nearby, make sure she can tolerate the decrease in attention, budget issues, and incremental grease stains during the project. Some women can get as jealous of cars as of other women.
If you gotta scratch the turbo itch, more power to ya (pun intended), you are in rare company!
