I wonder about the heat as well, but I think if you took some of the following steps, you could really cut it down.

1. Use an intercooler. It appears to me that most turbo 914ers decided to forgo the use of an intercooler.. why is that?

2. Jet-hot ceramic coat the complete exhaust manifold (a suggestion that I've heard from nearly all turbo 914ers)

3. Don't get greedy on performance.. keep the compression down and limit yourself on the amount of boost. I've also read that retarding timing by a few degrees can help dramatically as well.

It also strikes me that aftermarket spark systems would help dramatically.. using the crane or pertronix system provides a much more precise spark than the point system, and could reduce the possibility of failure in the turbo setup.

I'm reading about Subaru's fairly recent flat-4 engines. Unfortunately, I have no clue what's involved in converting the 914 to handle one.. nor how much it would cost to obtain one of them.
