I have had 2 different ignitors in my car over the past year and both manifested the symptoms you speak of.

Don't change anything on your car except put points back in. If the car runs fine, then it probably is the unit.

I yanked mine and have been running points ever since. I have had other problems, but that one never recurred. When I can save enough pennies, I'm going MSD. I've heard from a couple people that is the hot ticket.
