It's stamped into the gear. One gear will have the M with a Roman numeral "I" and the other will have the stamp along with a Roman numeral "II". There will also be a pro-date of a month and year, which may be written or stamped depending on the year of prodcution.
Some of the 914 gears (which would generally not be an "M" gear) have random letters stamped on them just kind of out there in the middle of nowhere. The Hurth 901 gears that would most likely be an "M" gear will have a very systematic stamping and writing of letters and numbers and not just an "M" stamped somewhere on the body of the gear off by itself.
