Question carb preheaters and vapor lock?

Hey guys,

I keep thinking my car has to be suffering from vapor lock, not enough to kill the engine, but just enough to affect performance. For example it seems to run much better when you drive it at night, or on cold days. If you sit at a standstill and rev the engine you can see the fuel filters fill with gas... if you run the engine hard when it's hot they always appear completely empty when you stop and look at them. A lot of people have assured me this is totally normal, I've just never seen a clear fuel filter on a car drop below about 2/3 full.

I did a check of the fuel pressure today... it always read between 2.8 and 3.2 psi. So it's getting gas... and I checked the plugs, they still look brand new, they are brand new.

I know I'm missing the preheaters and the sheetmetal that goes around the fuel pump, and I'm wondering if anyone thinks this could be significantly raising the temp of the engine compartment, especially around the fuel lines/pump.

It looks like I can't really do anything about the sheetmetal without removing the engine.... I don't think I'd want to try to remove enough of the other sheetmetal to get it on with the engine in the car, but maybe I could plug the preheater pipes somehow. I've seen a lot of 912s without them, is it something you can just plug up, or do you need to do something special? Also, if anyone knows a trick to getting that piece of sheetmetal on, let me know.

Thanks,
Andrew
