Chas,

It's kind of funny that you mention that because I've been searching for, but have never really found a definite answer on what the correct fuel pressure is for the 912. My owners manual, shop manual, and porsche's current product catalog all list different psi values for the fuel pump (for Solexes)! I'd been told that anything above 2.5 psi and below 3.5 psi was where the webers need to be and since, I know I'm getting an average of 3 psi throughout the RPM range I figured I was fine. Maybe I'll give the regulator a shot and lower it to see what happens. My car gets about 15-17 mpg which is bad, but not terribly bad I guess. I do get a puff of black smoke when I step on the gas, never after initially giving it gas though.
By the way, did lowering the pressure affect the performance of the car (acceleration, speed, etc...). I know that really shouldn't be the biggest concern, but... it's supposed to be a fun car right? There's probably a happy medium in there somewhere.

Now, when it's hot, that's a different story... I really think there is a problem with vapor lock... much more so than pressure. Hence the absence of any liquid gas in the fuel filters (I've been told that doesn't matter, but...). That's why I'm hoping plugging the preheaters and getting the sheetmetal in will stop the exhaust heat from entering the engine compartment and keep it cooler.
