The hold down nut on my '73 Datsun pickup is loose enough that I can rotate the distributor without loosening the nut further. Yet, the engine's timing does not change.
Now before anyone else says this, I will state that there is quite a difference between Datsuns and Porsches. but if your holddown nut is not unlike just about every other car I've ever seen, then I believe you just need to make it snug. Certainly, if you cannot rotate the distributor by hand, then it is tight enough, for sure.
