I agree and disagree.
I think for a
pop star, he is extremely edgy. Now of course that is not the same as being rock god edgy, granted. You should check out some of his pre-idol live performances to get a better sense of his wild side. His work in "Wicked" is pretty racy (not my style of music though).
While i agree that i do not see him as the rock band type, i think that as a pop soloist he is legitimately and sufficiently racy enough that he will be seen as credible. AI is getting in the mid 30 millions in votes every week this season, and he has been consistently dominating said voting, so it's a good bet he already has millions of genuine die hard fans. (As have most other previous Idol winners. David Cook- last year's winner has already gone platinum with his 1st post AI album)
I think the artist i would most directly compare Adam Lambert to is Prince.
Prince was one highly successful hard R rated pop-smurf for many years until he went totally over the deep end.
PS: I agree about Robert Plant. I was a loooooooong time Zep Head in my youth. That being said, i would LOVE to hear Lambert cover Immigrant Song, No Quarter, Kashmir, and about a dozen other Led Zep classics.
