Chances are that your pedalcluster is a bit bound up and the brake pedal is not returning properly. The helper spring may be gone too. It's possibly causing the power assist to be activating and your brakes are partially engaged causing the heated rotors and consequently hot wheels.
In other words, the brakes aren't completely off.
I had it occur on a '79 SC.
Try this...Run it and then jack up the car and spin the wheels. You'll at least determine if the pads are contacting the rotor.
