I have a "80" 5-speed sitting in shop now (trans. is out) and the breather has a silver cap on it.
Have never seen a red one but have not worked on "84" or up.
Sounds like PO might have removed it and just plugged the hole.(for what reason who knows)
You need to put a breather back on it though! Going to the shop today, will see if it looks like it can be done with trans. in and get back to you.
