I have not tried another ECU/DME because I don't know anyone with a similar car, but I have replaced everything but the ECU/DME, so I kind of narrowed it down to that. Yes, I've thought that maybe it could be something else, but can't imagine what.
One thing surprised me though. When I first started chasing this problem down, everybody said it probably wasn't the ECU itself, but the relay or sensors. The ECU is "bullet-proof" was the response. Today, however, when I talked to vendors who sell them, their consistent refrain was that these things go out all the time, and they sell them often. In fact, several vendors were out of stock for used/rebuilt ones. Just saying! Anyway, thanks for the help and pointers. I've ordered a rebuilt one, and may have the original rebuilt as a backup.
