Can anyone help me here!
The fact that you are even considering a 997 indicates that you don't completely buy into the idea that the water cooled cars are not real Porsches. I can tell you that they are. I currently have a lightly modded '84 Carrera, a 2000 996, and a '07 Cayman. I love them all and can tell you that the water cooled cars still have the unique "feel" of a rear-engined car; you can still certainly feel that the mass of the car is behind the rear wheels and can use it to great effect. The water cooled cars still have incredible steering feel, if not quite up to the unassisted feel of the old cars (what assisted car ever will?). They have amazing torque and power that just seems to go on and on, with redlines that exceed 7,000 RPM.

My advice is to drive one and then decide. Drive it hard (without abusing it, of course). Redline it in the first two or three gears if possible. Get on the brakes hard - up to the ABS if possible. You will feel the real Porsche character come alive in these cars. Trust me.

Let us know.
