FWIW, many have their fan and shroud painted, and it looks great. Many others say that the paint will eventually flake, with the possibility of peeled paint getting sucked into your motor. If true, that doesn't sound good.
Others have their fans media-blasted for a polished look, which also looks great...but needs frequent re-polishing to maintain that appearance.
I went "ghetto"...I spent about 2 hours with some "NevrDull" cotton wadding. Cleaned up the dirty magnesium very well, and maintenance is minimal.
