Pretty car.
However...
I'd guess he has the belts off because the timing belt failed and he bent the valves. Costs a bunch to fix this and if indeed this is the case, sadly, it probably relegates this vehicle to parts status.
Absolutely do a compression check before you buy. Then at least you'll have an idea whether there's something there to rebuild or its toast and parts only...
