If you are removing the AC permanently you can leave the compressor attached to the engine and the drop will go per the manuals. Just remember to disconnect the hoses and wiring at the compressor. As stated above the eco-friendly approach is to have the system vacated by an AC shop. I wonder if they charge you if you give them the freon. For the price they charge for an R12 refill they should pay you for it!
