Unfortunately...

the 996 tranny (according to legend) is dramatically different than your G-50. The shifting mechanism is completely different.....etc., etc. as Don alludes to.

The G-50 5 speed can be freshened up to include new synchros for under $3,000....if something major is wrong, double that amount.

Rumor has it that the 964/993 tranny is a better and more durable tranny than a 996....but here is an option...put in steel synchros and new sliders as well as heavy duty shifting forks (2 I believe), now you have spent some cash.

Get yourself a 993 6 speed...about $5,000 used. Crack it open, ruggedize it and put a lower geared ring and pinion....$2,500 for the R&P, at least 10 hours of labor....it just never ends.

Bottom line, sorry to hear about your tranny difficulties. I just spend over $2,000 to change out by 2nd 3rd and 4th gear synchros from brass to steel...it do shift sweet...and I have the FD Motorsports Platinum Shifting rod...nice!
