The purpose of the "S" bumper was to decrease the amount of front end lift on the 911 at high speed. It works quite well. You can get greater reductions by fitting different front bumpers/valences but you need to take into account aero balance when doing this. I believe that the "S" bumper is one of the few if not the only front aero device that Porsche fitted without the requirement of adding additional aerodynamic improvements on the rear of the car.
