Yes, the current 911 has always been a water cooled car. That's because the only thing shared between 996-on 911's and their air cooled predecessors is the name and some driveline similarities. Clean sheet design, the 996 was, using the most of modern CAD/CAE tools and materials, and building on watercooling engine technology used in 962's and such by Porsche for the prior 15 years or more.
When Porsche introduces a new model, it's never done
wrong. Even with their goddamned SUV- it's frowned upon by the purists, but the engineering is still porsche- the best offering of the SUV world.
