Anything west of Prairie and south of Imperial in Hawthorne will be "ok" but not really advisable. There are still 'good' pockets in Hawthorne but the area really isn't the best. Avoid "South Los Angeles" or South Central as it used to be known.
You really want to be looking west of the 405. El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, parts of Gardena and Torrance are all great places. Basically, the closer to the beach, the more you'll pay.
