Mine's a later model (1987 3.2)
Looking back at the haynes manual, the supplements at the back show the adjustment of the brake operating rod.
It states;
"With the engine off, manually operate the brake pedal. There should be 0.394in (10mm) free play"
I'll try that in the morning.
